you cannot join or invest in a business that is already trading<\/li>\n<li>innovative &#8211; you must have an original business idea which is different from anything else on the market<\/li>\n<li>viable, with potential for growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/endorsing-bodies-start-up\">endorsing bodies list<\/a> &#8211; you should only approach ones that are suitable for your business idea.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-it-takes-to-get-a-visa\">How long it takes to get a visa<\/h2>\n<p>The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"example\">\n<p>Example<\/p>\n<p>You can apply from 16 March if you plan to travel on 15 June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You should get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>You can check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/visa-processing-times\">guide processing times<\/a> to find out how long getting a visa might take in your country.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fees\">Fees<\/h2>\n<p>How much you pay for a Start-up visa depends on your situation and where you apply from.<\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th scope=\"col\">Who you\u2019re applying for<\/th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Apply (outside the UK)<\/th>\n<th scope=\"col\">Switch (in the UK)<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Yourself<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3363<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3493<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>If you\u2019re a citizen of Turkey or Macedonia<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3308<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3438<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>All dependants<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3363 each person<\/td>\n<td>\u00a3493 each person<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3 id=\"healthcare-surcharge\">Healthcare surcharge<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll also have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/healthcare-immigration-application\/pay\">to pay the healthcare surcharge<\/a> as part of your application. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immigration-health-surcharge.service.gov.uk\/checker\/type\" rel=\"external\">Check how much you\u2019ll have to pay<\/a> before you apply.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-you-can-stay\">How long you can stay<\/h2>\n<p>You can stay in the UK for 2 years on a Start-up visa.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot apply to extend this visa.<\/p>\n<p>You may be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tier-1-entrepreneur\/switch-to-this-visa\">switch to a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa<\/a> if you\u2019ve:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>completed your second year on a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa<\/li>\n<li>switched from a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa to a Start-up visa for your second year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"if-your-endorsement-is-withdrawn\">If your endorsement is withdrawn<\/h3>\n<p>Your visa may be cut short if your endorsement is withdrawn. If you want to stay longer, you must re-apply with a new endorsement before your current visa expires.<\/p>\n<p>You can only stay for a total of 2 years even if you\u2019re granted a new visa with a new endorsement.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-you-can-and-cannot-do\">What you can and cannot do<\/h2>\n<p>You can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/family-members\">family members<\/a> with you<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/switch-to-this-visa\">switch to this visa<\/a> from some other visa categories<\/li>\n<li>work in another job, as well as working for your business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You cannot:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/public-funds--2\">public funds<\/a><\/li>\n<li>work as a doctor or dentist in training<\/li>\n<li>work as a professional sportsperson, for example a sports coach<\/li>\n<li>settle in the UK on this visa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h1 class=\"part-title\">Eligibility<\/h1>\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr disable-youtube\" data-module=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Before you apply you need to have your business or business idea assessed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/endorsing-bodies-start-up\">an approved body<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They will provide you with an endorsement letter if your business is viable.<\/p>\n<p>You must also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be at least 18 years old<\/li>\n<li>meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/knowledge-of-english\">English language requirement<\/a><\/li>\n<li>be able to prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you\u2019re in the UK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\">\n<p>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/immigration-rules\/immigration-rules-appendix-w-immigration-rules-for-workers#part-w5-specific-requirements--start-up\">specific requirements for the Start-up visa<\/a> before you apply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"supporting-yourself\">Supporting yourself<\/h2>\n<p>You need to have had at least \u00a3945 in your bank account for 90 consecutive days before you apply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<nav class=\"gem-c-pagination\" role=\"navigation\" aria-label=\"Pagination\">\n<h1 class=\"part-title\">Knowledge of English<\/h1>\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr disable-youtube\" data-module=\"govspeak\">\n<p>You may need to prove your knowledge of the English language when you apply.<\/p>\n<p>You can prove your knowledge of English by either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>passing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/guidance-on-applying-for-uk-visa-approved-english-language-tests\">approved English language test<\/a> with at least CEFR level B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening<\/li>\n<li>having an academic qualification that was taught in English and is recognised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naric.org.uk\/visasandnationality\" rel=\"external\">UK NARIC<\/a> as being equivalent to a UK bachelor\u2019s degree, master\u2019s degree or PhD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you\u2019ve already proved it to be level B2 or above in an earlier successful application.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exceptions\">Exceptions<\/h2>\n<p>You will not need to prove your knowledge of English if you\u2019re a national of one of the following countries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Antigua and Barbuda<\/li>\n<li>Australia<\/li>\n<li>the Bahamas<\/li>\n<li>Barbados<\/li>\n<li>Belize<\/li>\n<li>Canada<\/li>\n<li>Dominica<\/li>\n<li>Grenada<\/li>\n<li>Guyana<\/li>\n<li>Jamaica<\/li>\n<li>New Zealand<\/li>\n<li>St Kitts and Nevis<\/li>\n<li>St Lucia<\/li>\n<li>St Vincent and the Grenadines<\/li>\n<li>Trinidad and Tobago<\/li>\n<li>USA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h1 class=\"part-title\">Documents you must provide<\/h1>\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr disable-youtube\" data-module=\"govspeak\">\n<p>When you apply you need to provide an \u2018endorsement letter\u2019 from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/endorsing-bodies-start-up\">authorised body<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also need to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a current passport or other valid travel identification<\/li>\n<li>bank statements showing you\u2019ve had at least \u00a3945 in savings in your bank account for 90 consecutive days before you apply<\/li>\n<li>your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tb-test-visa\">tuberculosis test results<\/a> if you\u2019re from a country where you have to take the test<\/li>\n<li>proof that you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/knowledge-of-english\">knowledge of the English language<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to have a blank page in your passport on which to put the visa.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/certifying-a-document\">certified translation<\/a> of any documents that are not in English or Welsh.<\/p>\n<div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\">\n<p>You may need to provide additional documents depending on your circumstances.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"part-title\">Apply<\/h1>\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr disable-youtube\" data-module=\"govspeak\">\n<p>You must <a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/apply-visa-type\/start-up-and-innovator\" rel=\"external\">apply online<\/a> for a Start-up visa.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to have your fingerprints and photograph taken at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-a-visa-application-centre\">visa application centre<\/a> (to get a biometric residence permit) as part of your application.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to collect your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/biometric-residence-permits\/collect\">biometric residence permit<\/a> within 10 days of when you said you\u2019d arrive in the UK (even if you actually arrive at a later date).<\/p>\n<p>You may be able to get your visa faster or other services depending on what country you\u2019re in &#8211; check with your visa application centre.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"applying-from-north-korea\">Applying from North Korea<\/h3>\n<p>You cannot apply online if you\u2019re living in North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>To apply from North Korea you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-form-for-uk-visa-to-work-study-and-for-dependants-and-right-of-abode-form-vaf2\">application form and guidance<\/a> &#8211; read the guidance if you need help filling in the form<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/democratic-peoples-republic-of-korea-apply-for-a-uk-visa\">read the instructions<\/a> to find out where to take your completed form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"apply-to-switch-to-this-visa\">Apply to switch to this visa<\/h2>\n<p>Check if you can apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/switch-to-this-visa\">switch<\/a> to this visa from another visa.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"part-title\">Switch to this visa<\/h1>\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr disable-youtube\" data-module=\"govspeak\">\n<p>You may be able to switch to a Start-up visa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\">\n<p>You should apply before your current visa expires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"eligibility\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n<p>You can apply to switch to this visa if you meet the eligibility requirements and you\u2019re already in the UK on one of the following visas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)<\/li>\n<li>any Tier 2 visa<\/li>\n<li>Tier 4 (General) student visa<\/li>\n<li>Standard Visitor visa &#8211; you\u2019ll need to get a supporting letter from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/endorsing-bodies-start-up\">endorsing body<\/a> to prove you\u2019re looking for funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You must meet all of the Start-up visa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\/eligibility\">eligibility requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you switch from a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa, you do not need to prove that your business is a new idea with potential for growth.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-you-can-stay\">How long you can stay<\/h2>\n<p>You can stay in the UK for 2 years on a Start-up visa. Any time you\u2019ve already spent in the UK on a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa counts as part of the 2 years.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-apply-to-switch-your-visa\">How to apply to switch your visa<\/h2>\n<p>You must apply <a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/product\/start-up-and-innovator-ic\" rel=\"external\">apply online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"providing-biometric-information-and-supporting-documents\">Providing biometric information and supporting documents<\/h3>\n<p>When you apply, you\u2019ll be asked to make an appointment at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/ukvcas\">UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (<abbr title=\"UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services\">UKVCAS<\/abbr>)<\/a> service point to provide your biometric information (your fingerprints and a photo).<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also need to submit your supporting documents. You can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>upload them into the online service<\/li>\n<li>have them scanned at your <abbr title=\"UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services\">UKVCAS<\/abbr> appointment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\">\n<p>You must not travel outside of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision. Your family members must have a visa if they\u2019re from outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eu-eea\">European Economic Area (<abbr title=\"European Economic Area\">EEA<\/abbr>)<\/a> or Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018dependant\u2019 is any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your husband, wife or partner<\/li>\n<li>your child under 18<\/li>\n<li>your child over 18 if they\u2019re currently in the UK as a dependant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-for-uk-visa-for-pbs-dependant-form-vaf10\">guidance on dependant applications<\/a> before you apply.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"savings\">Savings<\/h2>\n<p>You must have \u00a3630 for each dependant in addition to the \u00a3945 you need to support yourself. This is to show that your dependants can be supported while they\u2019re in the UK.<\/p><p>You need proof you have the money, and that it\u2019s been in your bank account or your dependant\u2019s bank account for at least 90 days before you or they apply.<\/p><div class=\"example\"><p>Example You must have \u00a32,205 if you want to bring your partner and 1 child with you to the UK: \u00a3945 to support yourself + \u00a3630 for your partner + \u00a3630 for your child.<\/p><\/div><h2 id=\"fees\">Fees<\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/start-up-visa\">Check the fees<\/a> for this visa.<\/p><h2 id=\"dependants-applying-from-outside-the-uk\">Dependants applying from outside the UK<\/h2><p>Your family members must <a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/apply-visa-type\/dependant\" rel=\"external\">apply online<\/a>.<\/p><p>They\u2019ll need to have their fingerprints and photograph taken at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-a-visa-application-centre\">visa application centre<\/a> (to get a biometric residence permit) as part of their application.<\/p><p>They\u2019ll have to collect their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/biometric-residence-permits\/collect\">biometric residence permit<\/a> within 10 days of when they said they\u2019d arrive in the UK (even if they actually arrive at a later date).<\/p><p>They may be able to get their visa faster or other services depending on what country they\u2019re in - check with the visa application centre.<\/p><div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\"><p>If your child is over 18 they cannot apply if they are outside the UK. They can apply from inside the UK if they are already here as your dependant.<\/p><\/div><h3 id=\"applying-from-north-korea\">Applying from North Korea<\/h3><p>Your family members cannot apply online if they\u2019re living in North Korea.<\/p><p>Each family member will need to make their own application. They must:<\/p><ul><li>download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-form-for-uk-visa-to-work-study-and-for-dependants-and-right-of-abode-form-vaf2\">application form and guidance<\/a> - they can read the guidance if they need help filling in the form<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/democratic-peoples-republic-of-korea-apply-for-a-uk-visa\">read the instructions<\/a> to find out where they need to take their completed form<\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"dependants-applying-in-the-uk-on-their-own\">Dependants applying in the UK on their own<\/h2><p>Your dependants can apply to extend or switch their visas to stay with you if they\u2019re already in the UK. Dependants must either:<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/product\/pbs-dependant-partner\" rel=\"external\">apply online as a dependent partner<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/product\/pbs-dependant-child\" rel=\"external\">apply online as a dependent child<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\"><p>Family members cannot apply in the UK as your dependant if they hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/browse\/visas-immigration\/visit-visas\">visitor visa<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><h3 id=\"providing-biometric-information-and-supporting-documents\">Providing biometric information and supporting documents<\/h3><p>When they apply, they\u2019ll be asked to make an appointment at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/ukvcas\">UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (<abbr title=\"UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services\">UKVCAS<\/abbr>)<\/a> service point to provide their biometric information (their fingerprints and a photo).<\/p><p>They\u2019ll also need to submit their supporting documents. They can:<\/p><ul><li>upload them into the online service<\/li><li>have them scanned at their <abbr title=\"UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services\">UKVCAS<\/abbr> appointment<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"application-notice info-notice\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Information\"><p>They must not travel outside of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until they get a decision.
